After leaving Florence we head south to Rome, but not before stopping in Sienna...

We worked our way through winding mountain roads into the busy city streets.

Our first view of the famous Piazza del Campo. The church was built around 1100ad and most of the city dates from that time period.

The pigeons were well trained - as soon as the people left this table, the pigeons came to partake of the leftovers!!

Did I mention this city was built on the side of a mountain? Lots of hills to push the stroller up.

Siena's cathedral, the Duomo, begun in the twelfth century, is one of the great examples of Italian romanesque architecture

There were inlaid marble mosaics throughout the floor, roped off to preserve them.

The walls along the side of the church were lined with many of these altars...

Entrance to library area...

These music books were huge - about 2 ft tall. Most were in latin.

They were lined up along the walls, covered in glass...

You can see how big they were - see Charlene at the end of the isle on the right? The books are about 1/2 her height!!

Again, long exposure times create ghosts when people move - see the one on the lower left?

This was pretty cool. They have openings in the floor covered with Plexiglas so you see the original foundation of the church. There was about 4 of these.

I tried to get a picture of the (very dark) ceiling by laying the camera on the floor and holding it as steady as I could.

Regular exposure at 1/30th of a second.....

Same picture holding the lens open for a full second.

Backed it off to 1/3rd of a second for this one. Some of the side detail is dark, but now the center is clearer.

Leaving Sienna and back on the road to Rome.

Stopped at a highway rest area and found an Italian Ferrari in the parking lot....JP was in his glory.
